About the Event
Join us on 26 April at 17:00 BST for a conversation with Ángel Losada Fernandez, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Sahel, on the Sahel’s many crises and the E.U.’s policy priorities in the region. There will also be a Q&A session after the talk. We will discuss, among other things: - The extensive E.U. involvement in the region - The issue of governance and security: How have groups like the ‘Islamic State in the Greater Sahara’ been able to gain such a firm foothold in the region? How can we overcome the distant relationship between Sahelian governments and their populations? As Sahelian states’ security forces kill more people than Islamist militants, how do we convince locals that a ‘return of the state’ in the Sahel’s ‘ungoverned spaces’ is in their interest? - The challenges posed by COVID-19 in one of the poorest regions of the world - The current humanitarian situation and E.U. migration policy
